Major Organ Film Finally Announced By Orange Twin

Well as of this week, Orange Twin finally officially announced the psychedelic film trip starring the likes of Kevin Barnes and Jeff Mangum.

Leonard Cohen, Madonna, Mellencap and Other Inducted Into Rock Hall of Fame

Congratulations to Leonard Cohen, John Mellencamp, Madonna, the Ventures, and Dave Clark Five for beating Donna Summer and the Beastie Boys into the 2008 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Look for them in NYC on March 10.

Animal Collective tour over, recordings on the horizon

Dave (Avey Tare) posted an update over on the boards updating us on the current battle plan for experimental eccentrics Animal Collective.

Now with the tour over, mixing for an upcoming EP including “Street Flash” and three other Strawberry Jam recordings is currently taking place with a probably release date in spring. Shows are scheduled in Europe, Japan, and of course the ATP Festival in may. Last but not least, recordings for the next album are planned to begin next year. And to answer all of your questions, yes “[they] are trying to record near the beach!”

“The Stripes recently recorded a mess of B-sides with Mr. Beck Hansen in his living room, which they’ll splay over a trio of 7″ “Conquest” discs and an all-encompassing U.S.-only digital download. In addition to co-producing the sessions, Beck contributed vocals and piano to “It’s My Fault for Being Famous” and played a little slide guitar on “Honey, We Can’t Afford to Look Cheap”. One black, one red, and one white 7″ will be issued, each with “Conquest” on the front and a different B-side on the back, due in the U.S. December 18 from Third Man/Warner Bros. and in the UK December 31 on XL.

The Stripes put the “Conquest” video to tape in Artesia, California with director Diane Martel. “Filmed with a visual urgency that brings the song’s Spanish themes, frantic horns, and compulsive pounding rhythm to life,” their website adds, “the video follows an explosive– if unconventional– love story that pits man against bull in the ultimate conquest.” To add an air of authenticity to the proceedings, Jack White trained extensively with noted bullfighter Dennis Borba. The clip will hit MTV November 26 and iTunes the following day.

And then, the bonus goodies: “Inspired by the ‘Conquest’ video, each single will also include a Mondo Toro trading card featuring the legendary, near-mythical matadors El Sloth, El Bianca Rosa and El Perdador. Despite being from early 1900s Spain and Portugal, these bullfighters look strangely familiar. U.S. copies of these singles will also include a different poster with each release.” In your conquest over our wallets, you have emerged victorious, White Stripes. “

M.I.A. “Kala”

Maybe I’m a little slow to jump on the wagon with this one, but what else can I say? I guess I’m not as up to beat on the next Sri Lankan hip hop star as some other people.

Already praised by the likes of Missy Elliott and Björk, M.I.A. has hit the American music scene with her sophomore album Kala. Described as “shapes, colours, Africa, street, power, bitch, nu world, and brave” by M.I.A. (Mathangi Arulpragasam by birth) herself. A catchy blend of ethnic hip hop, electronic rhythms, and entertainingly political lyrics (for example, MTV denied airplay for her song “Sunshowers” off of her debut album Arular because of the lyrics “Like PLO [Palestine Liberation Organization], I don’t surrendo,”) M.I.A. is a breath of fresh air in the hip hop scene.

Variety is what keeps the energy alive on this album. “Bamboo Banga” opens up the album with infectious tribal drumming and the lovably egotistical “I’m big timer, it’s the bamboo banga.” A couple tracks later, M.I.A. pulls us into the scene of what I can only think to describe as Bollywood disco with “Jimmy.” Whether it’s a matter of musical ingenuity or artist’s block, “$20″ is a blatant rip-off of New Order’s “Blue Monday” and the Pixie’s “Where Is My Mind?” Now, that’s not to say that the lyrics aren’t bizarrely unique and politically motivated; “Like do you know that cost of A.K.’s up in Africa? Twenty dollars ain’t shit to you, but that’s how much they are.” But wait, there’s still more. There’s “Paper Planes” which touches on subjects such as murder, robbery, and making paper planes all to a sample of the Clash’s “Straight to Hell.” As if that weren’t enough, I’ve got one more thing that will probably grab your attention… the final track features none other than Timbaland himself.
